Bag sizes

How big is the bag limit, really?

A number on a sign means little until you hold the bag next to it. Drag the slider to compare common limits with a backpack, a tote and a clutch.

12 x 6 x 12 in

The NFL clear bag limit. It is the number most fans mean when they say 12x6x12.

Where you see it

NFL stadiums. Other venues borrow the same number, but each one sets its own.

Quick answers

Questions people ask at the gate

  1. Sometimes. Many stadiums allow a sealed bottle or an empty plastic one, and some allow neither. Size and material often matter. Open the stadium page for the exact rule.

  2. It means your bag must be see-through, usually plastic or vinyl, and under a set size. Venues often allow a small clutch too. Everything gets looked at before you go in.

  3. Often not. Many arenas, stadiums and amphitheaters ban backpacks or limit them to a clear style. Check the venue before you pack.

  4. It depends on the venue. Some allow small ones, some set a size or weight limit, and some do not mention them at all. Our item page lists what each venue says.

  5. A small personal camera is often fine. Detachable lenses and professional gear are where venues push back. Look at the camera rule for your venue.

  6. Most parks allow strollers and set a size limit or a parking area for them. Some also rent them. The park page spells out the limits.

  7. Rarely at stadiums and arenas, and sometimes at amphitheaters or parks, usually with limits. Baby food and medical needs are commonly treated as exceptions.

  8. It is a bag no bigger than 12 inches wide, 6 inches deep and 12 inches tall. Several leagues use it for clear bags. The guide shows what fits.

Changelog

Recently checked rules

Every time we re-read a venue's rules, it goes in the log. If something changed, you will see it here first.

See how we check
  1. Second read of six venues

    Logged

Re-read in full: Busch Stadium (guide page), Nationals Park (guest conduct policy), Huntington Bank Field (prohibited items PDF), Hinkle Fieldhouse (clear bag announcement), Etihad Stadium (prohibited items help article). Several rules moved from not stated to a stated verdict.

  2. Amphitheaters

    Logged

Verified: Red Rocks, the Hollywood Bowl, The Gorge, Merriweather Post Pavilion, Jones Beach Theater, Wolf Trap’s Filene Center and Pine Knob, each from the venue’s own rules or the National Park Service page.

  3. Old Trafford, Twickenham and the CN Tower

    Logged

Verified: two UK stadiums from their clubs’ own pages, and the CN Tower from its own questions and safety pages.

  4. More college football stadiums

    Logged

Verified: 21 more college stadiums, including Ohio Stadium, Michigan Stadium, Sanford Stadium and the Rose Bowl, from each school’s own gameday or bag policy page. Several of these pages are short, and they say what the school does not mention.

  5. Allstate Arena, BMO Field and Audi Field

    Logged

Verified: the three venues that had been waiting on an official page. Allstate Arena rests on the Chicago Wolves guide for games there, because the arena’s own policy page refuses connections.

  6. The log fills as pages go live.

Our method

How a rule gets on this site

We do not guess. A rule goes live only when we can show where it came from.

  1. 1

    Find

We start at the venue's own policy page. Not a forum, not a ticket seller.

  2. 2

    Write

We put the rule in plain words and keep the numbers exact.

  3. 3

    Date

We save the link, the date and who checked it.

  4. 4

    Recheck

Busy venues get a fresh look every two weeks. Others every six or seven.

If a venue does not say, we say that too.

A note on accuracy

Venues change rules without notice, and rules can differ from one event to the next. Use this site as a quick way to the right page, then confirm with the venue for your date. We are not affiliated with any venue.
